WASH - Water, Sanitation & Hygiene

Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are 3 areas that are interdependent, and so the absence of one definitely affects the others. There must be a deliberate effort to ensure the right interventions are introduced to help improve the negative WASH situation in the country. A significant proportion of diarrhoea diseases can be prevented through safe drinking-water and adequate sanitation and hygiene.

Sanitation

Open defecation is wide spread in Ghana, it is estimated that 3 out of every 5 Ghanaians, attend to natures call in either the bush, drains, beaches, or at rubbish dump sites. This is because many lack proper and hygienic toilet facilities, thus compounding the issue of sanitation in the country. TFHO through WASH has introduced SATO PAN which is positioned as a safe, affordable , convenient and smart toilet targeted at the Ghanaian population currently using outdated toilets(open pit latrines etc.), or without toilets at all.

Water

The need for safe water in Ghana is significant, this is because nearly 10 million of the 25million population of Ghana, lack access to safe drinking water especially in the peri-urban to rural areas. Most of these people rely on rivers, ponds, streams etc. for water. TFHO under SIFPO 2, is collaborating with both the Public & Private sector to distribute Water Treatment Tablets to help households purify water before drinking.
