Tema, Feb. 14, GNA – The Total Family Health Organization (TFHO) marked World Condom Day with a campaign focused on safe sex sensitisation and condom distribution.
Celebrated annually on February 13, World Condom Day promotes safe sex practices, prevents unplanned pregnancies, and reduces HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
The event targeted traders, drivers, and the general public, providing education on condom use, early signs of HIV, and the importance of knowing one’s HIV status.
Mr Ahmed Bambila, a public health nurse from the Ghana Aids Commission, Sunyani, emphasised that HIV is primarily transmitted through unprotected sex and encouraged prioritising holth through safe sex. He also highlighted regular testing, as HIV symptoms often do not appear early.
Mr Joseph Addo-Yobo, TFHO Executive Director, stated the day is about action as well as awareness, creating access and partnerships to ensure condoms are readily available and normalised as a responsible choice for sexually active adults.
He added that TFHO, brand owners of Ebony Condom, is collaborating with organisers and entertainment venues to integrate safe sex messaging into edutainment activities in pubs, cinemas, and stage dramas, providing information in a relaxed, engaging environment.
Referencing a 2024 Ghana Aids Commission report, Mr Addo-Yebo noted that 334,721 people were living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana, with 42 new infections daily, underscoring the need for promoting condom use.
The sensitisation programme also ran concurrently at Kumasi Adum, Kasoa, Sunyani, and Madina, where public health officers educated residents and distributed condoms.
The executive director concluded that TFHO will continue engaging the public beyond the celebration to further promote safe sex practices.
